Overview & Highlights
Perched 128 meters above sea level overlooking the azure waters of the Bay of Bengal, Thotlakonda was a thriving Hinayana Buddhist monastery between the 2nd century BCE and 2nd century CE. Excavated by the Andhra Pradesh Archaeology Department in 1988.
The tranquil coastal complex features a Maha Stupa, circular chaitya grihas, stone pillared viharas, and carved rock cisterns (which gave the hill its Telugu name "Hill of Cisterns").
